Después de la gira Confessions Tour de 2006 donde según sus palabras, convirtió “al mundo en una pista de baile”, Madonna, ya una mujer casada, con tres hijos y a poco de cumplir cincuenta, quiere seguir en la dirección de la musica para bailar, pero esta vez, con un ritmo más urbano, una vibra más hip-hop. Finalizando el tour en Tokio, se encuentra con Pharrell Williams que le propone hacer música juntos. En los primeros meses de 2007 Madonna recluta para su nuevo disco a los productores Justin Timberlake (ex N’Sync), Timbaland y Pharrell, que es con el primero que empieza a componer. En febrero empiezan las sesiones y para abril ya hay varios demos grabados de lo que va a ser el nuevo disco. El 9 de febrero Madonna mantiene una entrevista telefónica con Larry Flick desde su estudio de grabación donde le confiesa que en oportunidades es ella con su guitarra quien aparece con la idea de composición musical del tema: “Es decir, no escribo todo en mi guitarra, y colaboro con mucha gente que a veces aporta la música, y a veces lo hago yo. Depende. Me encanta, es muy terapéutico para mí escribir en la guitarra”. Los conflictos personales en el matrimonio de Madonna y el cineasta británico Guy Ritchie empiezan a ser cada vez más notorios para ésta época (se divorciarían a fines de 2008). Hay rumores de infidelidades y está servido pensar que la letra de She’s Not Se se refiere a una experiencia personal de Madonna, pero no son más que rumores. Según reportes de periodismo musical lo que se trae entre manos Madonna esta vez es al hip hop lo que Confessions On A Dance Floor (2005) fue para el dance, tanto así que la diva está pensando en llamar a su álbum Black Madonna. El disco se completó a través de todo el 2007 con batallas de egos entre los artistas involucrados pero llegando todo a buen puerto. La versión definitiva de She’s Not Me fue grabada en las sesiones de octubre de 2007 con Pharrell Williams produciendo y rapeando en el track. Hacia diciembre Madonna invita a los ejecutivos de Warner a escuchar el disco y She’s Not Me está entre los temas que más resuenan entre los invitados. El disco, retitulado Hard Candy para evitar la controversia de Black Madonna, es refinado y remasterizado en enero y febrero de 2008 y es editado en abril de ese año justo a tiempo para que Madonna empiece un par de meses después su maratónico Sticky And Sweet Tour que la trajo por segunda vez a Argentina en diciembre de 2008.
